Ngāti Toa left Kāwhia and fought their way south, seizing Kapiti Island as a base that controlled Cook Strait and the trade passing through it.

The migrations known as Te Heke Tahutahuahi and Te Heke Tātaramoa carried Ngāti Toa, with Te Āti Awa and Ngāti Raukawa allies, from the Kāwhia coast to the Kapiti district. From Kapiti, Te Rauparaha commanded the strait and the whaling trade through it, and launched raids into Te Tau Ihu and as far south as Kaiapoi and Akaroa. The conquest reset the tribal map of the lower North Island and upper South Island barely fifteen years before the Crown began buying land there.
