A claim first lodged in 1849 was finally settled: $170 million, an apology, and the return of Aoraki/Mount Cook, over land covering most of the South Island.

Ngāi Tahu had pursued Te Kerēme, the claim, for seven generations over purchases that took some 34 million acres for around £14,750 with promised reserves never set aside. The Waitangi Tribunal’s 1991 report upheld nine of the ten grievances. The settlement gave the iwi a capital base it has since grown substantially, and made Ngāi Tahu one of the largest asset holders in the South Island.
