At 328 metres the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere, built as part of a casino complex and quickly adopted as the symbol of the city.
The tower went up in under three years as the centrepiece of Auckland’s first casino, a project that was itself controversial — casino licensing had only just been legalised. Whatever the arguments about how it came to be built, the result rewrote the skyline of a city that had never had a defining silhouette, and it appears on more postcards than anything else in Auckland. It remains the tallest freestanding structure in the southern hemisphere.
